Chapter Thirteen

“Four thousand, three hundred and fifty-five Mississippi. Four thousand, three hundred and fifty-six Mississippi. Four thousand, three hundred and fifty-seven Mississi—”

The gentle rocking I’d become accustomed to suddenly stopped. No more Mississippis could be counted, but I guess it didn’t matter. Counting Mississippiously wasn’t an accurate way to measure time or distance, no matter how much I wanted it to be.

It was a great distraction, though.

I was jostled in my seat as my truck was dropped back to the ground, my head hitting the roof.

“Owww!” I complained even though nobody was there to listen to me. I rubbed the crown of my head to take away the sting. Putting my now empty travel mug back into the cup holder, I unclipped my seatbelt and leaned over the center console to gather Reaver from the footwell, but the sword had once more disappeared without me noticing.

I didn’t know whether to take that as a good sign or not. Reaver did have the tendency to show up when I most needed it, and call me crazy, but being wrapped up as a tasty spider burrito and being carried halfway across the city in my truck kind of seemed like the time I most needed it.

I straightened, looking around at the interior of my truck bathing in the blue glow of my opal, noticing the color was weakening. Turning around, I saw that there were slashes in the web—holes that were letting in the… moonlight?

Through the gaps, I caught glimpses of a man with high cheekbones, caramel skin, dark eyes and pin-straight long black hair. He was dressed in old, ripped jeans and a flannelette shirt over a gray Henley.

It was the guy from the tape—from Annabelle’s murder.

“Stay calm, McKenzie,” I muttered under my breath. “You’re only unarmed and coming face-to-face with a murderer. No biggie.”

I tracked his progress around the truck as he slashed and hacked his way through the spider silk. When the passenger side window was clear, he opened the door—the hinges creaking ominously just like in a B-grade slasher flick. I scooted back against my door, pressing my spine closer to the molded plastic trim.

“Don’t come any closer,” I said, grabbing my travel mug and brandishing it at him. Dammit! Why couldn’t I have left some scalding hot liquid in there to throw in his face? “Stay where you are.”

A frown marred his otherwise perfect skin. “Excuse me?”

“I said stay where you are.”

“I’m just trying to help you.”

My gaze flickered down to the opal. It wasn’t glowing… yet. “I have help coming.”

At my statement, his brows rose. “You do?” He made a show of looking around. “We’re in the middle of the forest. How do you supposed they’ll find you?”

“He’ll find me.”

“Well, how about you come and warm up in my cabin while you wait?”

I shook my head, loose tendrils of my teal hair slapping my cheeks. “No. I’m staying here.”

The man’s eyes flashed with impatience before he grinned at me, revealing straight, white teeth. “I’m not going to hurt you.
